Maternal and Infant Feeding

Objective(s)

Reduce formula supplementation in breastfed babies within Raigmore Maternity Unit and increase the numbers of women who receive Healthy Start vitamin supplementation in the ante natal period

Activities

  • Support reduction of formula supplementation within maternity unit with breastfeeding co-ordinator posts who will provide support, training and audit.
  • Increase the numbers of antental women receiving healthy start vitamins
  • Implement the spread of the national donor human milk (DHM) use in the post natal ward setting

Governance

  • Maternity and Neonatal Programme Board.

Performance Measures/Outcomes

  • Numbers of women breastfeeding daily who supplement with formula.
  • Run charts with percentage of supplementation in breastfed neonates monthly.
  • Monitor trends in supplementation rates.
  • Monitor numbers of babies receiving DHM instead of formula and monitor outcomes
  • Numbers of vitamins ordered and distributed per midwifery and health visiting team.

Objective(s)

All women who wish to colostrum harvest from 36 weeks are supported to do so.

  • Colostrum harvesting policy in place.
  • Increase the awareness of colostrum harvesting to women and also link with specialist for type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
  • Monitor and audit colostrum harvesting in NHSH.
  • monitor trends in feeding outcomes for those women who colostrum harvest

  • Maternity and Neonatal Programme Board.

Performance Measures/Outcomes

  • Qualitative evaluation of feedback from service users ref colostrum harvesting.

Objective(s)

To ensure eligible families receive support to take up the Best Start Grants at Pregnancy and birth; Early Learning and school age. This includes an emergency formula provision pathway for families in crisis

  • Further develop monitoring system for Best Start Grants.
  • Raise awareness of and promote uptake of Best Start Grants through embedding it in service provision and providing information in various Health Improvement training, including breastfeeding training.
  • Pathway in place for emergency formula provision in Argyll and Bute
  • Evolve an effective pathway for Highland Social Care Partnership

  • No direct route in reporting to Highland Council as yet.

Performance Measures/Outcomes

  • Numbers of healthy start vitamins ordered/numbers of women receiving healthy start vitamins in pregnancy.
  • Numbers of eligible families claiming Best Start Grants.
  • Annual run charts to indicate those who are claiming Best Start Grants.
  • Planned qualitative work to look at what families use vouchers to purchase.
  • Numbers of families seeking emergency formula provision
  • Numbers of families being provided with emergency formula provision
