The hospital environment is designed and maintained to support and promote the health and wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors – Smoke-free Hospitals.

Activities

  • Support NHSH to implement Smoke-free Hospital Legislation, dissemination of training and resources.
  • Pilot opt out referral to smoke-free service for all smokers on admission.

Objective(s)

Tackle health inequalities by significantly reducing smoking rates within local communities, in line with the national target to reduce smoking prevalence to 5% or less by 2034.

Activities

  • Target Smoke-free services to support particular groups such as:
    • People who smoke and live in the 40% most deprived areas in NHSH
    • Pregnant women / people who smoke and their families
    • People who smoke and have poor Mental Health
    • Pilot incentive scheme for young pregnant women who smoke (20 years and under)
    • Provide group and 1:1 support to prisoners

Performance Measures/Outcomes

  • Number of quit attempts and number of successful quits at 12 weeks in the 40% most deprived areas.
  • Number of pregnant women accessing the service and number of successful quits.
  • Number of prisoners, patients and staff accessing the service.
